~~~ Watering Down Animation Master ~~~
< PREVIOUS - NEXT >
(7)  At this point you could drop the waves model into a scene an animate, but lets add a secondary ripple to the water.  Create a new material and call it "water bump map."  Right click the base attribute and change it to a turbulence combiner.  This time I used Fractal Sum.  The material should be about 15% the size of the original wave material.
(8) Now drag this material onto the waves model, and check the "bump" box under the properties.  I set the % to -30 to just give it a slight bump.
(9)  This one can now be animated just like the the first material we did.
Create a new action for the waves model and drag the bump material to the action.
This time though, I only animated the "Y-Translate" and only by a small amount.  It moves only 7 inches over 5 seconds.
Just a side note, creating just this animated bump map can work for scenes where the camera is far away from the water without the need for a displacement map.
(10)  Now you can drag the Waves model in to a new choreography and set up your scene.  Don't forget to drag your bump material action onto the wave model shortcut in the choreography.  Adjust your water color and scene lighting to your liking and render away.
Click to see the final rendered Quicktime.
